‘What A Beast!’ Huge Snake Found By Hiker Near South Carolina Creek

A massive snake recently caught the attention of hiker Meredith Langley at Florence’s Jeffries Creek Park. Langley shared her encounter on Facebook, emphasizing the importance of respecting wildlife. She described the snake, later identified as a non-venomous brown water snake by biologist Greg Lucas, as at least four feet long. Despite its size, the snake didn’t exhibit aggression, prompting Langley to appreciate the encounter as a teaching moment for her children.

Langley noted the snake’s presence in an area frequented by copperhead snakes, water snakes, and water moccasins. She highlighted the need for caution during their weekly hikes. Lucas clarified that water snakes, though appearing larger due to their muscular bodies, are not dangerous.

Langley emphasized the significance of acknowledging the snake’s habitat, expressing gratitude for the encounter, and teaching her children to respect nature. The incident served as a reminder to exercise caution while exploring the outdoors.
